Our perception
of animals is acquired and derived from the way the animal was introduced
to us. Our origin, culture, books, TV, cartoons, and the presence of
animals in our immediate environment all influence this perception which
is often far from reality. In my work I explore this acquired perception
and compare it to reality. I visit zoos worldwide to research and get
a first hand impression of the animals. I look for the minimal properties
that identify them and use that as my painting subject. It may be a
distinctive body part, a recognizable gesture, body shape, typical color,
design or pattern. I use thick paint and pallet knives to portray what
I perceive to be the essence of the animal.
